July 28 Volcano Day

Haleakala is an active, but not currently erupting, volcano that last released its fury in 1790. Over 200 years later the land surrounding the lava flow is still barren. The summit rises 10,023 feet above sea level. The crater is 3,000 feet deep, 7.5 miles long and 2.5 miles wide - a total of 22 miles in circumference. Made it to the summit...what a scary drive!

Amazing! They had to post this sign? I sure did not feel like running around... I obeyed this sign.

As for the Volcano Bike rides...no thanks...Drive up, get the view and quickly get down.

This is above 10,000 ft. so the air is thin.

I enjoyed this, and I am glad I did it...but I will not be doing this one again.

July 26 Kaanapali and Lahaina

We travelled to Kaanapali...Kaanapali was Hawaii’s first planned resort. Tons of Hotels and shops, also very busy. I perfer staying in Kihei, doesn't feel as crowded as Kaanapali. We did a little bit of shopping at Whaler's Village and went to Lahaina.

Lahaina is a historic town that has been transformed into a Maui hot spot with dozens of art galleries and a variety of unique shops and restaurants.

Once the capital of the Hawaiian Kingdom in the early nineteenth century, Lahaina was also a historic whaling village during the whaling boom of the mid-1800’s. Up to 1,500 sailors from as many as 400 ships took leave in Lahaina including Herman Melville, who immortalized the era in his classic novel Moby Dick.

July 25 Return from Hana

We travelled further down the Hana Road before doing the return drive and went to the ʻOheʻo Gulch, also known as the "Seven Sacred Pools". This series of waterfalls and pools is located inside the Haleakala National Park. The drive back was scarier than the drive going to Hana. Main reason is you are not hugging the Mountain side, you are riding the edge (cliff-side). Sure was glad when we made it back to Paia. Love this little town. It is such a throw back to the 60's. I didn't run into my my buddy Willie. I understand he likes to hang around Charlies. Charlies make the best breakfasts.

Feels good to be back in Kihie!



July 24 The Road To Hana

84 km (52 miles) 619 curves, 59 Bridges. 46 of which are only one-lane bridges, requiring oncoming traffic to yield and occasionally causing brief traffic jams if two vehicles meet head-on. Typically this road takes about 3-4 hours to drive and it has tons of attractions along the way. At times the drive feels like you are white-knuckling the steering with all the curves and blind one way sections on the road.
We are staying over night in Hana and will continue the adventure. I have posted the Hana pictures.
